For those who don't know, John Payne has a voice totally unlike John Wetton - he's more in the "Rick Astley" school (remember '80's pop?), although he's got a bit more rawness, and has occasionally been accused of "hystrionics" (most unfair!).There are only 3 uptempo songs on this CD, one of which is an instrumental.The songwriting quality is overall very good. Some of it is excellent - Kings of the Day gives me goosebumps - I just wish there had been more rockers, like on the first 2 or 3 releases. But never mind, it's still a good listen. The musicianship is, as usual, high standard, althoughmore… I'm not sure why they need all the guest bass players and drummers - having said that, Vinnie Colaiuta is excellent, and so is Simon Phillips. The others are solid, if unimaginative.The real discovery, for me, is guitarist Guthrie Govan, who has now joined full time, and whom I saw on tour with them last month.The man is a phenomenon. He can tap, sweep, shred, and all with a bid grin on his face. He gets to play solos on several songs, and I can guarantee that if you like fast guitar you'll struggle to find anything better this side of Dream Theater. And he can play the blues too.Not to diminish Steve Howe's contributions, he's good as well. The other guys aren't bad. The three bonus tracks are left from early sessions with Ian Crichton on guitar (Saga), and they aren't bad, especially Hands of Time (not Tim!), which is perhaps the most "prog" of the songs. Now if Guthrie had got to play on the uptempo numbers as well, WOW!!!!!And apparently there's a DVD due in January 2003 of the latest US tour. Where do I sign up?!

For Asia fans, this is a safe purchase. The songwriting and the level of musicianship is as good as we were hoping. These guys still sound fantastic!
The good points: most of the songs display the great writing that we knew from the first album. I'm glad to see Steve Howe prominent in the mix, as well as with a few writing credits, as on the first album, the real power came not just from the strong songs, but the classic arrangements and musicianship of which Howe was key. The production and performances are spot-on. Wetton vocals sounds stronger than ever, Downes provides those great keyboardsmore… swathes, and Howe is almost as varied as he is on Yes albums. It would have been good to hear some more Palmer stuff, though. He is ALWAYS solid, that guy!!!
The bad points: well, apart from Nothing's Forever, there are no real bad points. Some others have pointed out that some of the songs are a tad on the Icon slow side, and I agree. I would like to have heard more of the rockier stuff, but even these songs are strong. If they'd been on Silent Nation, they would have been stand-out.
On this point, Phoenix is far superior to Silent Nation. All you Payne fans, that's why Downes left: the more control Payne had over the songs and production, the worse they were. They were no longer anything like Asia.
A couple of rock tracks with some room for Carl Palmer to let loose would have been great!
In Summary: this is a good album, worth getting for Asia fans. Whilst I would like to have had more rock tracks, it occurs to me that I am playing this cd a lot. (but I do skip over Nothing's Forever...). Oh - and see these guys in concert. Fantastic!!!!!

Nightwish — финская метал-группа, исполняющая песни преимущественно на английском языке. Была образована в 1996 году в городе Китее. Раннее творчество Nightwish отличалось сочетанием женского оперного вокала бывшей вокалистки Тарьи Турунен и тяжёлой атмосферы пауэр-метала. Judging from the way Dark Passion Play starts out, it's understandable to assume that it's some sort of opera aria. But hold tight, dear friends, because from out of nowhere metal guitar riffs come swooping in. That's Nightwish for ya — a Finnish quintet that had been walking the line between symphonic and metallic for ten years by the time of this 2007 release. The album signals the arrival of new singer Anette Olson (who replaced longtime member Tarja Turunen), but for longtime fans worried that this lineup shuffle may alter the band's sound and direction, there's no reason to fret —more…; Nightwish are as bombastic and dramatic as ever. Understandably, there are quite a few similarities between symphonic metal and prog metal, and this is certainly the case on such tracks as "Bye Bye Beautiful," which contains a very Dream Theater-esque opening. Elsewhere, "Eva" focuses primarily on the vocal talents of Nightwish's new frontwoman, while the slow-building album opener, "The Poet and the Pendulum," proves to be a neat summary of Nightwish's style. Depending on which side of the metal fence you're on, Dark Passion Play is either a symphonic metal triumph or merely pretentious twaddle.

There isn't one song on Oceanborn that you feel you have to skip ~ you have to just start from the beginning and NOT even touch the skip buttons ~ if you hear all the songs together all the way through as a whole, you will appreciate their individual raw talent and origonality much more. For me I loved this album more and more every time I put it on ~ this is a must have!!!

Spinefarm (en) так же выпустил платиновую редакцию этого альбома 24 ноября 2004 года, содержащую так же «Live to Tell the Tale», «White Night Fantasy» и видео на «Nemo». Северо-американская версия Once содержит вместо этого видео «Wish I Had an Angel».

В записи композиции «Creek Mary’s Blood» принял участие индеец племени Лакота Джон «Two-Hawks» (англ. дважды ястреб). Он поёт на языке своего народа и играет на флейте.

As you've probably guessed from my title, Nightwish mean the world to me. This was the first album of their's I bought, (though I now own all 6) and I can safely say that this is the best by far, they get better and better with each new album, I cannot WAIT for the next one.
It's a pity I'm not really allowed to swear in this review, because I was just looking through a few of the other reviews and I was so angry. The (only) one-star review asked what age group the reviewers are (9-14 was suggested), and said that this album is a rip off of others. All of this is rubbish, Nightwish are the onemore… and only, the original, the unique, it is them who have been ripped off by other bands trying to play epic operatic metal and generally failing miserabley (may I point out, these bands do not include Within Temptation, they started out at the same time as Nightwish so they are not copying, but they still are not as good.)
Anyway, I'm not just saying this because they are my favourite band of all time, but EVERY SINGLE TRACK on Once is a true work of genius, and there is something for every mood, e.g. Dark Chest Of Wonders is very uplifting, good for when you're feeling happy and energetic; Romanticide and (bonus track)Live To Tell The Tale if you're feeling a bit pissed off; Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan for when you're sad or a bit down... I could go on... but I won't because we'd be here for days. If you are new to Nightwish, this album may take a little getting used to, their music is like nothing else and hits you pretty hard. I'll admit that I didn't like all of this album when I first bought it, but now I know that if I was gonna crash on a desert island, I'd take a stereo and this album, without a doubt. In particular, The Siren is one which took me really quite a long time to warm to, though now it is probably my favourite of the whole album because of the amazing atmosphere it creates.
And not only is the music pure talent and inspiration from start to finish, the lyrics are too. Again, they can take some getting used to, but when you know more about the band's (and particularly lyricist & mainsongwiter Tuomas Holopainen's) history you can start to understand some of them. Whether you can relate to them or not of course is a different matter, it simply depends on who you are and your experiences in life, but I myself can truly say that many of his words do mean a huge amount to me, they are all, sometimes painfully, raw and honest. Some say that Nightwish are too epic, too dramatic and too cheesy. Well, as for the cheesiness, you find one cliche here for me and I'll change my mind, but noone's done it yet. And the epicness and drama? Well, indeed it is epic and dramatic, that fact is undeniable, but since when has that really been a bad thing? It's epic and dramatic in a good way, and life is so unbelievably dull and boring, and for me, music, especially Nightwish's music, brings some colour and energy and emotion into the grey sameness of every day.
If you're a big fan of the straight forward indie punk my-girlfriend-dumped-me-oh-deary-me sort of thing, you'll probably not like Nightwish's huge powerful music and strange cryptic lyrics, but maybe you should give it a try anyway, it might open your mind. As for everyone else, I don't care who you are, just try it, it could change your life, I know it changed mine.
