Evanghelos Odyssey Papathanassiou is the full name of the man known to many as the artist Vangelis. Although best known for his musical compositions Vangelis has not limited himself to the role of composer, as he also likes to paint and sculpt. Born in Volos, Greece on the 29th of March 1943 Vangelis was raised together with a sister and brother. According to his own memories Vangelis has always been fascinated by sound and music, ever since his earliest childhood. He remembers as a kid he was always banging on things to see what kind of sound it would produce, and even staging a public concert at the age of six ! The fascination for sound is essential to understand Vangelis and his work. During his long career (now already spanning more than 30 years), his work has received the appreciation of a worldwide public, and received many prizes. Nevertheless it seems that Vangelis has always tried to let his music prevail before any commercial success. From his early successes with groups like the Forminx and Aphrodite's Child, to his highly acclaimed scores for movies like Chariots of Fire and Conquest of Paradise, Vangelis usually shies away from public attention and rather focuses on his next experiment in artistic creation.
Eureka - Live In Rotterdam
Цитата:
This concert was organized by the Dutch ministry of Economic affairs to promote and celebrate the "Eureka Project"; an initiative to stimulate international scientific cooperation between European companies. Vangelis was asked to provide the highlight of the event.
The concert took place at the docks in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. A floating stage was constructed. Vangelis was seated in the middle, surrounded by his synths and some classically Greek styled props. He was backed up by a choir.
To accompany the music some buildings in the neighborhood were used for projections with colors and laseranimations. Furthermore there were participating choppers, boats and movable cranes.
Jon Anderson appeared as guest for the track "Italian Song" and Markella Hatziano appeared for "Glorianna".
Mythodea - Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey
Цитата:
Academy-Award winning composer Vangelis performed his epochal composition "Mythodea" at the Temple of Zeus in Athens, Greece, on June 28, 2001, to an audience of thousands at the site and an additional audience in the tens of thousands who watched it on a giant video screen in the Marble Stadium built for the revival of the Olympics in 1896. The concert, which was under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and presented by the Hellenic Cultural Heritage Society, the entity responsible for the organization of the Cultural Olympiad, was the first major concert to be performed at the temple, which dates back to the 6th century BC. "It is a very important setting," Vangelis remarked, "with very significant energy." Featuring sopranos Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman, the concert also included the London Metropolitan Orchestra, the 120-member chorus of the National Opera of Greece and twenty-eight percussionists.
Merging his love of music, space and mythology, Mythodea was inspired by Vangelis' long time fascination with NASA's space program. And the music celebrates the NASA 2001 Mars Odyssey Mission. The concert event featured projected images of Mars from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and icons from Greek Mythology. "The saga of Martian exploration continues, now enhanced vividly by the music of Vangelis," Jim Garvin, NASA's chief scientist for the Mars Exploration Program, said in a statement included in the concert program.
On the 28th of June 2001 Vangelis performed his choral symphony 'Mythodea'. The performance, staged at the ancient Temple of Zeus in Athens.
Vangelis conceived, designed and directed the entire concert, which staged Sopranos Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman, the London Metropolitan Orchestra (conducted by Blake Neely) and the Greek National Opera Choir.
